This time of year, you can mix up the fine dining, theater- and concert- and museum-going, craft-beer tasting, historical sightseeing, and all the other cosmopolitan pleasures of San Diego with absolutely world-class ecotourism.

Right now, huge gray whales—gentle giants of blotchy hide, knobby backs, and baleen grins—are cruising southward to calving and wintering grounds in Baja California, right past the San Diego coast. They’re coming from Alaskan waters: their summertime buffet table. This journey is no mere walk in the (watery) park: It’s a 12,000-mile-long (round-trip) odyssey, one of the greatest animal migrations known.

And you can experience this natural wonder firsthand as a guest of ours at the Sofia Hotel: one of the most auspiciously situated (and all-out welcoming) downtown SanDiego hotels!

Prime Time, Whale-Wise

While you can spot gray whales off our local coast anytime between December and April (by late winter/early spring the leviathans are northbound again, but often farther offshore), January is just about prime time. At Cabrillo National Monument on the Point Loma Peninsula—one of the best vantages for whale-watching in the region—you’ve got an excellent chance of spotting a spout or two by staking out at the Whale Overlook or the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.

“Field Marks” of the Gray Whale

If whales are passing close enough, you can sometimes spot them with the naked eye, but binoculars are a real help; the Visitor Center at Cabrillo lends out a small number. Typically the grays swim beyond the kelp beds, so focus your searching from that border to the skyline. A gray whale’s spout may be 15 feet high, and with a little practice you can begin to distinguish the wispier, puffier look of these “blows” from whitecaps.

That said, calm seas definitely deliver better whale-watching conditions, as do overcast skies: Glinting glare is about as bad as breaking waves when it comes to trying to pick out whales. Because of the position of the sun, morning makes for the most optimum time of day for looking.

As they travel north to south (right to left, to a shorebound observer), the grays usually follow a recognizable swimming rhythm: taking breaths at the surface, then diving for several minutes before coming up for air again. Generally the whales will spout several times, each blow separated by perhaps half a minute or a minute, then go deep for three to six minutes.

The spout is the most conspicuous sign of a gray, and it’s something you can pick out with your peripheral vision. Once you see one, hoist those binoculars and scan slowly left of where the blow faded; hopefully you’ll see the next in sequence—and maybe the whale’s head or ridged back, too—and then be able to track the animal. As the gray dives, you’ll often catch a glimpse of its upraised tail flukes.

If you’re really lucky, you may see a breach: when a whale throws itself into the air and crashes down with a mighty splash. Or perhaps you’ll spot a “spyhop,” the whale raising its prow-like head straight up from the water.

Staff at the Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center can help you look for the grays; the monument also holds a Whale Watch Weekend in January or February. With its blufftop panorama, meanwhile, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps makes another good shore-based whale-watching perch. The aquarium also leads offshore whale-watching cruises that embark from Downtown San Diego, in case you want to try viewing the grays from their own element.

Catch the Gray Whale Migration During Your Sofia Hotel Stay

So come enjoy fabulous hospitality and amenities right in the heart of America’s Greatest City at the Sofia—the best of the best when it comes to downtown SanDiego hotels—and dedicate a day or two to the spectacular whale-watching going down this time of year along our Pacific doorstep!

Every year here at the Sofia Hotel—one of the best-loved San Diego hotels—we have the pleasure of hosting guests on holiday vacations in America’s Greatest City, which just so happens to be a wonderful (and warm) place to celebrate this time of year.

In case you’re able to join us during this Yuletide/New Year’s stretch—and we hope you can!—here are just some of the festivities going on around town that you might consider taking in.

Multiple Nutcrackers

For many, it’s simply not the Christmas season without attending a performance of Tchaikovsky’s whimsical ballet, and you’ve got multiple productions to choose from during your San Diego holiday getaway: by the California Ballet at the San Diego Civic Theatre (Dec. 21 through 23); the 25th Anniversary Tour of the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker at the Jacobs Music Center (two performances on Dec. 21); by City Ballet of San Diego at the Spreckels Theatre (through Dec. 24); and, after the New Year, Culture Shock San Diego’s outside-the-box version (Jan. 1 through 7).

San Diego Symphony: Noel Noel

On December 22 and 23, the San Diego Symphony presents a heartwarming slew of classic holiday tunes (including some sing-along caroling) at the Jacobs Music Center.

A Christmas Carol at Cygnet Theatre

Indulge in another defining holiday tradition by attending Sean Murray’s Cygnet Theatre adaptation of the Charles Dickens story (through Dec. 24), which of course sees old Ebenezer Scrooge reckon with the Christmas spirit through the course of a supernatural night. The crotchety fellow at the center of the action is played once again by Tom Stephenson.

Holiday Installations

Festive displays come alive all over San Diego this time of year. To really immerse yourself in holiday magic, swing by the Global Winter Wonderland (through Jan. 7) at SDCCU Stadium , which evokes iconic landmarks around the world in lit-up lantern form, or the celebrated Garden of Lights at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas (through Dec. 23 and then again from Dec. 26 through 30), which features more than 125,000 lights and sundry seasonal activities. At the San Diego Zoo, meanwhile, check out Jungle Bells, spotlighting cold-climate critters in Northern Frontier’s Holiday Forest and treating visitors to caroling, “trampoline elves,” and other delights.

The Holiday Bowl & Parade

On December 28, San Diego goes all out for the Holiday Bowl, which’ll see the Washington State Cougars square off against the Michigan State Spartans on the SDCCU Stadium gridiron. The game itself kicks off (literally!) at 6 PM, but of course before that there’s the Holiday Bowl Parade: the biggest darn balloon parade in the whole country! The procession—with its giant inflated characters, floats, marching bands, and other pageantry—begins at 10 AM and draws more than 10,000 spectators; streetside viewing is free.

Holiday Movies on the Beach

Outdoor movies in December? Sure—in San Diego, anyway! Take in holiday flicks at Coronado Beach at 8 PM on December 23 (A Christmas Story) and December 30 (Cool Runnings).

New Year’s Eve

Some folks like to mark New Year’s Eve with a quiet gourmet dinner; some like to party till the sun comes up; some always intend to stay awake for the midnight toast, but invariably crash early. No matter your preferred method of celebration, the Sofia makes for tiptop New Year’s Eve accommodations—and if you want to go the revelrous route, you’ll find heapfuls of merry bars and clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter.

We’d love to see you this magical season here at one of the most historic and happening San Diego hotels, but no matter what your plans are, the whole Sofia crew wishes you a very happy holidays!

Luxury designer brands (Prada, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, etc.), heavyweight department stores (Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s), Nike and Apple and Disney outlets—Fashion Valley has you covered, and it’s quite easy to reach by car or public transport from the Sofia!

You can easily strike out on foot from the Sofia for a Gaslamp Quarter shopping safari, and meantime you’ll have no end of cafes, bars, and restaurants at your fingertips for when you need a break.

One of San Diego’s most beloved holiday traditions is nearly upon us: the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights!

We hope you’ll consider joining us at the Sofia—one of the most beloved hotels in SanDiego—in order to experience, along with more than 100,000 other spectators from near and far, this bedazzling on-the-water display!

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights: A Holiday Spectacle to Cherish

This year’s Parade of Lights takes place on two consecutive Sundays: December 10th and December 17th. Those evenings, you can feast on the sight of 80-plus luxuriantly lit and deliciously decorated boats as they are wending a merry course through the bay: from Shelter Island across the America’s Cup Harbor entrance to Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, the Pier at Cesar Chavez Park, and then to the “finish line” at Coronado Ferry Landing.

USA Today recently chose the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights—motoring along for its 46th year—among the contenders for the “Best Holiday Parade” in the nation.

Each year’s Parade of Lights comes with a theme, and 2017’s should surely delight any and all scalawags: It’s “Arrrgh! A Pirate’s Christmas.”

Viewing the Parade

Timing-wise, the piratical procession begins at 5 PM and takes roughly an hour to pass any given vantage. You can check out more viewing details at the official website, but as a rough guide the parade will reach Harbor Island at 5:30 PM, the Embarcadero at 6 PM, Seaport Village a half-hour later, and Cesar Chavez Park at 6:45 PM.

At the Embarcadero Maritime Museum and at the Coronado Ferry Landing, meanwhile, announcers will be providing information about the boats forming the parade, so if you’d like some insider knowledge stake out around those viewpoints.

Parking’s hard to come by along the Bayfront, but with accommodations at the Sofia Hotel you’re within easy reach of the all the luminous action: The Embarcadero and Seaport Village vantages are remarkably close.

Take in the 2017 San Diego Bay Parade of Lights During Your Stay at the Sofia Hotel

So, come enjoy downtown hospitality at one of the standout hotels in SanDiego, the Sofia, and while you do mosey over to the waterfront on December 10 or 17 (or heck, both nights, if you’re so inclined) to watch the famous San Diego Bay Parade of Lights!

Each and every day of the year, we here at the Sofia Hotel give thanks for our wonderful guests, our invaluable staff, and all of our fantastic partners. In that sense, Thanksgiving is merely an opportunity to express that daily gratitude a little more formally.

We truly are so very thankful for our extended Sofia family: from the guests, brand-new and regularly returning, who come to us from all across the country and all across the world to our incredibly hardworking employees who make daily operations at the hotel hum along without a hitch.

We genuinely love giving people such an advantageously situated home-away-from-home in downtown San Diego, and in the process honoring the legacy of our historic building, established back in the 1920s as the Pickwick. We love this venerable (and revamped) hotel, we love our neighborhood here at the doorstep of the Gaslamp Quarter, and we love our city of San Diego—and there’s nothing like introducing the charms of all of the above to our guests.

We also can’t say enough good things about our on-site restaurant partner Currant American Brasserie, which adds so much to the Sofia with its mouthwatering fare, lovely ambiance, and stellar service.

Wherever and however you’re spending it, here’s a happy, happy Thanksgiving from the whole team here at the <a href="Each and every day of the year, we here at the Sofia Hotel give thanks for our wonderful guests, our invaluable staff, and all of our fantastic partners. Meanwhile, if you’re seeking San Diego hotels for a last-minute Turkey Day getaway, we certainly invite you to mark the holiday with us at the Sofia: We’d love to have you!
Thanksgiving alone makes November a month to give in to one’s appetites, but in our neck of the woods there’s another exceptional epicurean excuse: the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival!

This year’s gustatory gala, the 14th annual, is underway from November 12th through the 19th, when the climax of the whole affair, the Grand Tasting, goes down at Embarcadero Marine Park North. And listen up: Elegant accommodations at one of the most beautiful hotels in downtown SanDiego, the Sofia, put you within earshot of the festival’s figurative dinner bell.

Big-name chefs, insightful food discussions, and of course an all-around feast to remember: Don’t miss the 2017 San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival, and take advantage of the Sofia Hotel’s proximity and fabulous hospitality while you do!

Events & Celebrity Chefs

The San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival always draws quite the lineup of celebrity chefs, restaurateurs, and various other culinary movers-and-shakers, and the 14th go-round certainly lives up to the caliber of past years.

You can take a gander at the full roster of the 2017 festival’s “personalities” right here. A sampler platter? How about Katsuya Fukushima, executive chef of and partner in Daikaya, Bantam King, and Haikan, three awesome eateries covering a whole lot of territory in that rarefied realm of Japanese cuisine; Mei Lin, Season 12 winner of the popular TV series Top Chef; Tommy Gomes, fishmonger with Catalina Offshore; and Catt Fields White, the CEO of San Diego Markets.

The San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival itinerary is similarly stuffed to the seams. Monday the 13th at the LOT Liberty Station sees the screening of Fermented, a new documentary starring internationally known chef Ed Lee. On Wednesday, November 15 at 6 PM, Kitchens for Good will host “Behind Farm to Table,” a panel discussion on the state of farming in the U.S. that’ll also feature some hands-on clinics in cheese-making and butchery.

At noon on Friday the 17th, Executive Sushi Chef Jeffrey Roberto will teach “Sushi + Sake” at Sushi on a Roll, a unique lesson that’ll also debut, for that day only, a special SanDiego Bay Wine & Food Festival Roll. That evening at 7 PM, meanwhile, Chef Aron Schwartz of Marina Kitchen will host fellow kitchen maestros Susette Gresham (Acquevello), Bernard Guillas (The Marine Room), and Kelly Mariani (Scribe Winery) for the edible nostalgia of the “Roots Dinner Experience,” focused on wine-paired dishes important to their careers.

And then of course there’s the Grand Tasting on Saturday the 18th, which begins at noon (unless you’ve landed yourself Early Admission for an hour before). More than 60 San Diego-area chefs will be on hand for this party, which’ll come lubricated by 700-plus wines plus all manner of craft beers and spirits. That comes followed up by a rooftop Stella Artois-presented after-party at Jsix centered on Asian cuisine, with Jsix’s Executive Chef Anthony Sinsay, the aforementioned Chef Fukushima, and Charles Phan, chef/owner of the Slanted Door restaurant line in San Francisco all whipping up some tip-top eats.

Take in the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival With a Room at the Sofia Hotel

So bring along that appetite of yours to the 2017 San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival this week, and make your base of operations the Sofia Hotel: one of the leading hotels in downtown SanDiego—and home, mind you, to its own fantastic restaurant, Currant American Brasserie!

One of San Diego’s crown jewels, Balboa Park sits comfortably among America’s great park-scapes: a showstopper for the quality of its specific attractions (the San Diego Zoo, the Museum of Man, the Japanese Friendship Garden, etc.) and its gorgeous overall architectural and botanical scenery. Last year the city celebrated the 100th anniversary of the modern park’s birth during the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition (although the ultimate origin of the greenspace dates to the 1860s).

When you call the Sofia Hotel (one of the best-in-class hotels in SanDiego) your home-away-from-home here in Southern California, you’re just a short trip away from Balboa Park. And while of course you can entirely experience its appeal on your own freewheeling exploration, we thought we’d spotlight some of the organized tours you can take that shed some behind-the-scenes insight into one of San Diego’s most beloved public spaces.

Ranger-Led Balboa Park Tours

At 11 AM every Tuesday and Sunday, park rangers lead interpretive tours of Balboa Park out of the Visitors Center in the House of Hospitality (a lovely reconstruction of the original building built for the Panama-California Exposition). You’ll learn some fascinating nuggets of history on these forays as well as details on the park’s celebrated landscaping.

Self-Guided Audio Tours

Also at the Balboa Park Visitor’s Center, you can rent an audio tour covering everything from park history to landmarks. The tour lasts roughly an hour and a half, and the last ones offered at 2:30 PM. An excellent choice for appreciating the park on your own, but with an informative running commentary from experts.

Architectural Heritage Tours

Some of Balboa Park’s best-known features are its Spanish Colonial-style buildings erected during the Panama-California Exposition (or recreated in the original style). These include the California Tower, the Cabrillo Bridge, the Casa del Prado complex, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. At 10 AM on the First Friday of every month, the Committee of 100 offers guided Architectural Heritage Tours of Balboa Park so you can learn more about the backstories and stylistic highlights of these iconic landmarks.

Botanical Building Tours

Another of Balboa Park’s standout structures is the much-photographed Botanical Building, guided tours of which are offered at 11 AM on the third Friday of the month. You’ll get the inside scoop on the history, the architecture, and (of course) the horticulture represented by this impressive (and florally jampacked) building. The tours kick off at the south end of the adjacent Lily Pond.

Japanese Friendship Garden Tours

Docents lead daily tours (free with admission) of the Japanese Friendship Garden, an utterly beautiful traditional Japanese garden symbolizing the bond between San Diego and its sister city Yokohama. From bonsai masterpieces and fragrant trees and shrubs to stone lanterns, ornate gates, and other seamlessly blended architecture, this oasis of tranquility is a must-see.

A guided tour is a fabulous way to experience Balboa Park during your next stay at one of the very best hotels in SanDiego, the Sofia!

Well, it’s that superbly spooky, grandly ghoulish, outstandingly otherworldly (we can keep going) time of year again, and here at the Sofia Hotel we’re happily getting into the Halloween “spirit.” With one of the very best San Diego hotels are your All Hallow’s Eve headquarters, you’ve got many, many ways to embrace the eerie—and have a bone-chilling blast doing it. (We’ll try to stop with the alliteration, but no promises…)

Here are just a few of those options for Halloween fun within shouting—or perhaps we should say “shrieking”—distance from the Sofia!

Spooktacular Halloween Run/Walk (October 22)

Soak up the lovely October fresh air of San Diego, get some exercise (useful for combatting pumpkin-pie and Halloween candy overindulgences), and celebrate the haunting season all in one fell swoop at the Spooktacular 15k, 10k/5k Run/Walk at Hospitality Point Park! Open to adults and kids alike, the event features plenty of creatively garbed participants, so it makes sense a costume contest is also part of the proceedings…

Monster Bash 2017 (October 28)

This hugely popular Halloween soiree goes down from 6 PM to midnight right in our neighborhood of the Gaslamp Quarter. Thousands attend the demonic party, now in its 17th year, to rock out at five themed stages, from the Twisted Dream House to Clown Carnage. Live DJs supply scary-good beats, while the wildest, wackiest Halloween getups in San Diego compete during the Monster Bash Costume Contest on the charmingly named Death and Decay Stage—the champ (and it could be you!) pocketing a cool $5,000. Get your Monster Bash 2017 tickets right here!

The Gaslamp’s Very Own Haunted House (October 28 & 31)

In a neighborhood as history-soaked (and once risqué) as the Gaslamp Quarter, there are bound to be a few spooks and spirits hanging around. Perhaps the most celebrated haunted hotspot in the city is the William Heath Davis House (also called the Davis-Horton House). Noted as a relic of the district’s earliest days as New Town San Diego, and this October you’ll have the opportunity to get acquainted with its paranormal side courtesy of two Ghost Hunting Tours presented by the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation and the San Diego Ghost Hunters squad. The after-hours tours—during which you’ll learn some fascinating local history while seeking out unexplained noises and apparitions—kick off at 10 PM on the 28th and the 31st.

Celebrate the freaky and frightening with us at the Sofia, the first choice among San Diego hotels for Halloween and any and all other getaways, this October!

With the year-round weather as lovely as ours, it’s no surprise that San Diego’s such a popular destination for sporting events—a healthy share of them taking place along our sun-swaddled Pacific coastline. There’s an especially exciting on-the-water thriller coming down the pike this October, and as a guest of ours at the Sofia Hotel—one of the top hotels in SanDiego—you’re just a short cruise down the bayfront from all the drama.

We’re talking here about the Extreme Sailing Series, an elite international Stadium Racing competition more than a decade old that’s chosen San Diego for the second-to-last race event of its globe-hopping season. The cranked-up catamaran contest will be going down October 19 through 22 at Harbor Island, so book your room today at the Sofia, so you’re all set to take it in!

A Day (or Four) at the Races

The high-riding, high-adrenaline, ultralight watercraft involved in the Extreme Racing Series are GC32 catamarans, which thanks to their hydro-foiling technology fly as much as they do ride the water at speeds of up to 39 knots. Last year the GC32 replaced the larger and slower Extreme 40, and their nimbler, fleeter design and more hair-of-your-pants handling has really upped the drama in what was already a plenty dramatic competition.

Seeing these state-of-the-art boats (and their fast-acting crews) in up-close action is awesome, and that’s just what you’ll get to do at Harbor Island: The races, each of which kicks off with a four-minute countdown, take place just offshore.

The Extreme Sailing Series will also be hosting the first-ever Extreme San Diego Kiteboard International, so the watersports action will really be fast and furious—and varied. The kiteboarding races will be held before and after the daily GC32 matchups.

Throw in some post-race live music Friday and Saturday nights—the Destroyers and Ottopilot, respectively—and you’ve got plenty of entertainment both on and offshore at Harbor Island for the Extreme Sailing Series!

Attending the Extreme Sailing Series Event at Harbor Island

The Race Village at Harbor Island is free to enter for watching the Stadium Racing proceedings, though if you want a really exclusive look at the catamaran spectacle, you can spring for one of the VIP packages.

When you stay with us at the Sofia—one of the best hotels in SanDiego—you’re only a few miles from the kiteboarding and foiling contests taking place on San Diego Bay during the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series. Treat yourself to an October vacation in America’s Greatest City, take in some superb sailboat racing, and enjoy the unsurpassed Downtown San Diego hospitality of the Sofia Hotel throughout your stay!

Prevailing south swells, coupled with the periodic offshore punch of Santa Ana winds, make this time of year perfect for riding some Pacific waves along the San Diego County coast.

A Plethora of Nearby Surf Spots

From the legendary Trestles point break up north to the waters off Imperial Beach, you’ve got a rich variety of surfing destinations scattered all the way down San Diego County’s long and epically beautiful coastline.

The San Diego Tourism Authority has an excellent roundup of countywide surf breaks, but here’s a brief list of some of the notable ones closest to the Sofia:

Del Mar—Open to swells from multiple directions, Del Mar offers some of the most varied and reliable year-round surfing in the area.

La Jolla—A global hub for regional surfing, the beautiful strand of La Jolla is a great place for beginner and intermediate board-riders to fine-tune their skills. Specific spots include La Jolla Shores and Windansea.

Coronado—Within shouting distance of the Sofia, Coronado offers friendly beach breaks as well as the respectable shore break of Outlet.

Dipping Your Toes Into Surfing

If you’ve never surfed before but are intrigued by the sport—and it’s easy to become intrigued after watching the pros do their magic at one of San Diego’s surf breaks—why not give it a try? An excellent way to test the waters (literally) is via a bodyboard, which helps you get a sense of the feel and rhythm of surfing on a beginner-friendly piece of equipment.

If you catch the bug via bodyboarding, you’ve got no shortage of options when it comes to local surf instruction. Many, many San Diego-area outfits offer lessons for beginner surfers, so consider taking advantage while you’re rooming with us at the lovely and historic Sofia: surfer-friendly as San Diego hotels come!
