Nothing says springtime like flowers! If you’re a fan of roses, lilies, irises, and other sweet-scented showstoppers, you’ll want to mark the third weekend in April on your calendar: It’s another year’s run of the Coronado Flower Show, celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2015!

The event, the biggest tented flower show in America, is a time-honored tradition, having been ringing in the San Diego spring since 1922. As a guest here at the Sofia Hotel, it’s wonderfully quick to get to the proceedings, which take place at Spreckels Park on Orange Avenue in Coronado. The unforgettable flower displays under the tents encompass almost an entire city block!

The Coronado Flower Show, a collaboration between the City of Coronado and the Coronado Floral Association, begins at 1 p.m. on April 18. Admission costs $5 (with free entry for children 12 and under as well as Coronado Floral Association members). Saturday-afternoon music on the bandstand comes courtesy of the Coronado Big Band and the Retro Rockets.

That evening’s Spring Fling party—which features live music, culinary offerings from better than 25 area restaurants, wine, and local microbrews—has a “Flappers & Flowers” theme, a nod to the era in which the flower show got its start. (You must buy a separate ticket to attend the Spring Fling.)

On Sunday, April 19, the show’ll be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with bandstand performances by Jumpstart with the Luvnutz, the Coronado Concert Band, and the Coronado Island Jazz Band. Awards will be handed out at 3 p.m.; at 4, you’ll be able to buy cut flowers and roses.

Meanwhile, the show’s own lively Wine & Beer Garden opens Friday evening and then stays hopping throughout the show’s duration. It’s the perfect place listen to the music and savor the perfumed breeze with a high-quality libation at hand.

With its epic spread of horticultural arrangements, its live entertainment and enticing refreshments, Coronado Flower Show makes for one lively weekend in the Southern California sunshine. And on those two days, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more vernally flavored feast for the eyes than under its tents!
