Can’t-Miss December Football In San Diego: Holiday Bowl & Poinsettia Bowl
December 22nd, 2015|SofiaBlog

It’s time for some topnotch post-season college football in America’s Finest City!

The December action at Qualcomm Stadium kicks off on the 23rd with the Poinsettia Bowl and continues on the 30th with the Holiday Bowl. So book yourself a room at the Sofia Hotel and come take part in this year-end gridiron tradition!

The Poinsettia Bowl

Facing off for this 11th round of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl will be the Boise State University Broncos and the Northern Illinois University Huskies in their first-ever meeting. The Broncos earned an 8-4 record in the regular season this year with a 5-3 performance in the Mountain West’s Mountain Division; the Huskies closed their season at 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference, in which they were Western Division champions (they ultimately lost to Bowling Green in the MAC Championship game).

This year’s Poinsettia Bowl marks the 14th straight bowl showing by Boise State; in 2014 they overcame the Arizona Wildcats at the Vizio Fiesta Bowl. Meanwhile this’ll be the eighth consecutive bowl appearance for the Huskies, who lost to the Marshall Thundering Herd at last year’s Boca Raton Bowl.

The bowl starts at 1:30 PM PST on December 23rd. Besides the Broncos/Huskies battle, the event will feature, for the very first time, a fireworks fete called “Stadium Spectacular.”

The Holiday Bowl

Meanwhile, the Holiday Bowl puts the spotlight on the University of Southern California Trojans—fresh on the heels of their victory here last year—and the University of Wisconsin Badgers, who’ll be making their Holiday Bowl debut.

Like the Broncos, the Badgers—who placed third in the Big Ten West Division with a 6-2 conference record (9-3 overall)—have featured in bowl games now for 14 straight years, the best active streak of any Big Ten team. The Trojans, in turn, have an 8-5 overall record this regular season and a 6-3 showing in the Pac-12, in which they topped the South Division. USC has triumphed in nine of its last 11 bowl appearances—including last year’s Holiday Bowl, when they edged the Nebraska Cornhuskers 45-42.

It’s been almost a half-century since the Badgers and Trojans last faced off, which only amplifies the upcoming Holiday Bowl drama on Qualcomm field! Kickoff is 7:30 PM PST on December 30.
