Comic Con San Diego

The world’s greatest comic-book convention—and one of San Diego’s largest and best-known happenings—is right around the corner, and the Sofia Hotel’s an unbeatable place to stay for the big event!

We’re talking, of course, about Comic-Con, enjoying its 47th run-through from July 21 to July 24 (with a preview evening on Wednesday, July 20). As it has for more than two decades of its long history, the convention—which goes way beyond comic books in scope—is taking place at the San Diego Convention Center, nothing more than an easy stroll from the Sofia.

Packed to the Gills

As always, there’s something for everybody at the 2016 Comic-Con, whether you’re a sci-fi fanatic, a connoisseur of comic books and graphic novels, a film buff, or simply a curious and enthusiastic observer of pop culture. Film screenings, lectures, workshops, artist networking, autograph sessions, comic books and other merchandise for sale, the ever-popular Masquerade—it’s no surprise the four-day event needs 19 rooms in the Convention Center, plus space in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, the Marriott Hotel, and the Horton Grand Theatre.

This year’s Comic-Con has a fantastic lineup of guests: comic-book legend Stan Lee (who helped birth such iconic superheroes as Spider-Man and the X-Men), cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (creator of the classic Bloom County and its offspring Outland and Opus), writer-artist Lisa Hanawalt (the producer and production designer of the Netflix series Bojack Horseman), and many more.

50 Years of Star Trek

And if you’re a Trekkie (or Trekker, if you prefer), you’ll be happy to know that the 2016 Comic-Con is doing its part to honor Star Trek’s 50th anniversary—not least with a graphic of the late Leonard Nimoy as Spock dominating the official event guide. (That image, created by Ty Mattson, will be part of a series of Star Trek artwork the Michael J. Wolf Gallery’s presenting this month.)

Keep an eye on the Comic-Con website as the full and final schedule of events, exhibits, and speakers is revealed.

Whether you’re attending costumed in the getup of your favorite character or just coming for the spectacle, Comic-Con won’t disappoint. Book yourself a room at the Sofia Hotel so you’re conveniently close to the convention: We welcome all superheroes and supervillains!
