If you want to get out and soak up that stunning San Diego summer, there are few better means than a bicycle. And for a topnotch cycling route immersing you in the beauty of our waterfront, try the Bayshore Bikeway!

The 24-mile route links Downtown San Diego with Coronado, hugging the splendidly scenic shore of San Diego Bay all the way. You can kick off your pedaling adventure right from the Sofia Hotel, as we’re only a few blocks from the Broadway Pier: From there, you can either set off southward along the eastern side of the bay or hop the Coronado Ferry to begin on the island.

And remember: If you don’t have your own bike, you can rent one (free of charge) right at the Sofia!

Tracing the Bay

The Bayshore Bikeway wraps around San Diego’s beautiful waterway via several of the bay’s cities. From Coronado, you’ll cruise the Silver Strand Isthmus, with San Diego Bay on one side and the Pacific on the other. With beaches to your left and right, it’s hard not to pull over for a little sun-worshipping!

Then you’ll pass through Imperial Beach—as far southwest as you can go in the U.S., with Tijuana just a stone’s throw away—to wrap around the southern toe of the bay. Curve north to enjoy the handsome bayfront of Chula Vista and National City before regaining San Diego’s gorgeous Embarcadero.

Landmarks along the way include the Coronado Bay Bridge, the bird-rich salt marshes of the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and Naval Base San Diego.

A Fine Day Out

With its level grade, the Bayshore Bikeway’s a sheer joy to pedal. That said, you’ll want to make sure you tote along plenty of water and snacks to keep yourself refreshed for those 24 miles. Spots such as the Coronado Brewing Company, meanwhile, serve as fine venues for a little R&R recharge along the way.

Treat yourself to a tour to remember along postcard-perfect San Diego Bay with a ride along the Bayshore Bikeway. There’s nothing better than a day out in the Southern California sunshine, followed by a happy return to the Sofia Hotel for a great meal and a well-earned bed!
